MEASURING BREATH ACETONE FOR MONITORING FAT LOSS
While acetone measurements in breath have been studied for over 50 years, efforts over the last 20 years have better explained the relationshipbetween breath acetone and fat loss. The LEVL device, which is currently in development, will offer a tool to quickly quantify the rate of fat loss.
LEVL Clinical Scientist, Joe Anderson Ph.D. emphasizes the significance of breath acetone measurement as it applies to the weight loss in his recent review, Measuring Breath Acetone for Monitoring Fat Loss in Obesity – A Research Journal.
In the review, Joe mentions the following key points in connection with acetone breath measurement and weight loss:
- As a byproduct of fat metabolism, acetone in blood and breath is known to increase with caloric restriction as stored fat is mobilized to meet energy demands (instead of using carbohydrates). Therefore, stored fat is utilized to meet energy demands helping people achieve fat loss goals.
- Consumption of carbohydrates within the hours before exercise significantly decreased fat burn during exercise over a wide range of exercise intensities. A high carbohydrate snack just prior to exercise prevented the onset of post-exercise fat burn.
- In multiple studies, breath acetone increased twofold at the end compared to the beginning of exercise therefore signifying an increase in fat burn with continued exercise.
- Exercise can affect day-to-day measurements of breath acetone. Subjects submitting to caloric restriction and daily exercise had greater daily breath acetone lev
els than caloric restriction alone. - Measurement of acetone in breath requires both a well-controlled breath sample and an accurate and reliable measurement device. LEVL is excited to bring this technology to your home in 2016.
- Maintaining a 2 ppm (parts per million) breath acetone concentration while on a calorie restriction diet should cause a fat loss rate of ½ lb per week.
